...Habit is what keeps you going!
A thought-provoking start to the blog for June, which is a slightly different one as I have been working on a lot of exciting things in the background...more of which is yet to come! Next week brings the halfway mark of the year and this is a great opportunity for us to build on our experiences of the year so far, and to consider what we can improve in the second half of the year...
Nevertheless, these words by Jim Rohn remind us about the importance of the quality of motivation. And this is the subject for this month's blog.
“A little progress each day adds up to big results”
Words spoken by Satya Nani which were very apt for this month, as we began the month with the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, as Her Majesty the Queen celebrated her 70 years reign. What an astounding achievement, and one which led me to consider motivation and how we can target and utilise it to the best of our ability. The picture above demonstrates resilience, friendship and determination to continue, which forms the focus of my blog for this month. As I was able to spend time by the seaside, this allowed me to consider motivation in its essence...
Activation, Persistence, Intensity…
Reminder, Routine, Reward…
Idea, Goals, Attitude, Support, Performance, Success…
When we first consider motivation and its essence, we may turn habitually to a screen and ‘google’ it (which leads to the barrage of words above), we may open a book and look for a definition or perhaps a synonym, we may even give a thought to our own levels of motivation…but how often do we consider motivation internally and think about how motivation is a personal trait which should be adapted to ourselves as individuals?
Motivation can, and perhaps should be, something which is personal to us all, something which we can hone and something which we can improve for all situations which we may find ourselves in, not just whilst out on the water. Given the recent unprecedented circumstances which the world found itself for a long periods of time, surely this is a great time to reflect on what motivates us as individuals, in every aspect of life, not just in the sporting world?
Here, I insert the following words:
“Push yourself because no-one else is going to do it for you”
Although the author is unknown, the power of the statement is not diminished in any way. It is useful for us to remember this in all situations which we face in our lives. However, it equally doesn’t mean that we should be forcing ourselves to achieve our best, no matter what.
Before we start to delve deeper into the sporting world, and in particular water-sports, it seems appropriate that we take a moment to consider Olympians’ words and how they feel about motivation. We begin with the most successful and most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 28 medals (23 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze) from 5 Olympic Games. Michael Phelps. He said: “Don’t put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the further you get”.
Next, we move to an individual who was the founder of the International Olympic Committee and who was its 2nd President. He is often known as the father of the modern Olympic Games. Pierre de Coubertin. He said: “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.”
Finally, we move to an Olympic gold-medal skier who was inducted into the National Ski Hall of Fame in 2004. She became the first American woman to win World Cup downhill season titles, which she achieved in 1995 and 1996. Picabo Street. She said: “To uncover your true potential you must first find your own limits, and then you have to have the courage to blow past them.”
I have chosen these three individuals for different reasons, because they reflect the qualities of outstanding success, perseverance and courage. They all talk about motivation as being something personal, and together they seem to suggest a reasonable way of working to improve your motivation.
When we consider sailing in the UK, we can’t help but think about Ben Ainslie. One of the most successful sailors in Olympic history, winning medals at five consecutive Olympics from 1996 onwards, including gold at the four Games held between 2000 and 2012. Before being involved in the America’s Cup, he recalled time when he was sailing Optimists as a child and saw a British America’s Cup challenge that was training in Falmouth. In the words of Michael Phelps, he dreamt about what he could achieve. In the words of Pierre de Coubertin, he fought well. And in the words of Picabo Street, he had the courage to blow past his fears and uncover his true potential. But how do the words by the decorated athletes and individuals who had the foresight to believe in themselves, relate to our own time out on the water?
Sailing is a sport that requires motivation.
Motivation to maintain your fitness levels.
Motivation to rig and de-rig a boat.
Motivation to get out on the water, irrespective of wind and weather conditions.
