...Without their leaves, how lovely they are, spreading their arms like dancers. They know it is time to be still.”
A beautiful and poignant way to begin November’s blog with words by author Cynthia Rylant. The month of November is traditionally a time of remembrance, not only with Armistice Day on the 11th, but also because of the time spent before the festivities begin in December ahead of Christmas.
The Armistice, which was an agreement to end the fighting of the First World War as a prelude to peace negotiations, began at 11am on 11 November 1918. The word itself derives from Latin arma (arms, weapons) + sistere (to halt, stand still) meaning to halt weapons. Each year, the Armistice service commemorates the signing of the Armistice which brought an end to the First World War and we take time to remember all those who gave their lives in service to their country since 1914.
In a similar way, the end of November is the end of the Liturgical or Church year, as the new year starts the first Sunday of advent. Many individuals still take the time to think to pause, reflect and consider a new beginning with the arrival of Christmas.
Canadian poet Alexander Louis Fraser wrote:
“Fear not November’s challenge bold—
We’ve books and friends,
And hearths that never can grow cold:
These make amends!”
This is a beautiful and very simple way of considering the month of November; making sure that we remain warm and positive towards others and keep family and friends close. Christmas can bring a lot of expectation and perhaps pressure on yourself and others around you, to have the best Christmas day, the best Christmas decorations and even the best Christmas dinner!
Therefore, I thought it would be a useful time to consider a poem in detail and ponder on its benefit in our own lives. I came across the following poem, entitled A Reminder whilst musing on the topic of Reflection:
Once in a while
One has to sit back
And recollect on
Every moment of their life
There are some moments
That taught once in
A lifetime lessons
Rare ones full of blessings
With the rush
In the proceedings
Without evaluation
No one can know their purpose in life
Learn to take a break.
Evaluate. Then continue.
A purposeful life strives
to alter the past for a lifetime.
I love the way in which this poem epitomises the sense of chaos and confusion during our everyday life, which is somewhat heightened in the days and weeks leading up to Christmas, as we are surrounded by bigger and brighter billboards, adverts and calls to action to buy particular items. This poem recommends that we take the time out, and then we return with renewed vigour and determination to continue our legacy. Take the time for yourself and your loved ones. Make sure that you enjoy the build-up to the festive season. I recently went for a swim and was pleasantly surprised to consider the universe from a different perspective. The way in which the elements are able to connect us with the world in an unusual way is very inspiring and stirring, and I would wholeheartedly recommend you taking the time for yourself,..perhaps just simply to work out what will make your festive season so special...and perhaps that is listening to a new podcast...?!
I am delighted to announce that I have launched my own mini podcast-type series @snippetswithsitara which will feature stars from every walk of life, talking about their own life experiences, how they deal with their challenges and their advice for future generations…the first episode features Olympic sailor Saskia Tidey as she campaigns towards Paris 2024 with her new helm Freya Black. I am always looking for new individuals to feature in this series, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any suggestions! Please click on the link to hear the episode on Instagram and Tiktok.
Thank you for all your continued support for the brand instagram account. I have been thoroughly enjoying some festive party food and enjoying hearty meals at home, just as much as visiting restaurants and I hope that you are able to take joy in all that you cook, bake and eat during this time!
I conclude November’s blog with some inspiring words:
“November: The last month of autumn, but the beginning of a new adventure; time to take a risk and do the unexpected.”
Enjoy the last of November!
Love,
Sitara xxx
